Welcome to Travel Guide 2 Thailand, the site about travel, tourism and vacations in Thailand.

The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia. It is bordered to the East by Laos and Cambodia, to the West by Myanmar, and to the South by Malaysia. Thailand also has coasts of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.

Thailand has several distinct geographical regions:
  1. The North of Thailand is mountaineous, and contains the highest point in the country, Doi Inthanon at 8,451 feet (2,576 meters).

  2. The Northeast of the country is a plateau with an average elevation of 650 feet (250 meters), known as the Khorat Plateau (or Isan), and bordered on the East by the Mekong River.

  3. Central regions of the country are relatively flat and are dominated by the Chao Phraya river valley.

  4. In the South of the country, bordering Malaysia and the Malay peninsula, is the Kra Isthmus.
Thailand had an estimated population of 62,828,706 as of 2006. The largest city in the country, by far, is the capital, Bangkok (Thai: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon; Krung Thep), which had a population of 5,705,061 as of April 2007. There are also ten other cities in Thailand with populations of over 100,000.

Thailand is a newly industrialized country, and had the world's highest growth rate, of nearly 9% per annum from 1985 to 1995. However, the Thai currency, the baht, came under pressure in 1997 (triggering a wider Asian financial crisis), causing it to be devalued to less than 50% of its previous value (as compared to the US dollar), and the economy to shrink by more than 10% in a single year. Since then, the Thai economy has bounced back led by exports and a domestic recovery program dubbed "Thaksinomics" (after the 2001 to 2006 Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra).
