Click Here | Product Description: The construction of wooden houses raised on stilts, which help to escape floods and pests, is a phenomenon found across Southeast Asia. Over many centuries each country has developed its own unique tradition. Thailand is no exception and, indeed, each of the country's four main regions has developed its own distinctive style, making the wooden houses of Thailand among the most widely diverse and beautiful examples of Southeast Asian architecture.
The Thai House not only traces the history of these versatile buildings, but also explains the stages in their construction, the beliefs that underlie the positioning of every architectural element, and the complex ceremonies celebrating their construction. Beautiful photographs and authoritative texts celebrate a wide variety of Thai houses. |

Click Here | Product Description: "A wartime twist of fate resulted in a rare eyewitness account of Southeast Asia's most esoteric female performers: the dancers of the ancient Cambodian ballet. More than 30 years after the Khmer Rouge genocide their intriguing story will be published as Earth in Flower." Mystical Origins Since the dawn of recorded history, Khmer royalty nurtured a dance style unique to their Asian kingdom, yet instantly recognizable throughout the world. Spiritually, the graceful dancers embody the essence and strength of the Khmer race. Analysis of a Hidden Art Earth in Flower thoroughly covers choreography, musicology, costuming and stagecraft. The surprise is learning how these women profoundly affected Asian history for a millennium, as living goddesses, priestesses, queens, concubines, hostages and diplomats. Extraordinary Access A twist of fate gave the author rare access to the formerly sequestered troupe of royal dancers, teachers, theater and archives. Earth in Flower offers new insights into this beautiful art, its long-hidden history, and how the dancers balance the Khmer relationship between heaven and earth. A Wartime Twist of Fate In 1970, a military coup deposed King Sihanouk and seized control of the royal dancers. Surrounded by war, scholars sought to document this cultural treasure by engaging researcher Paul Cravath. He arrived as a circle of war gripped the capital city, becoming one of the only Westerners in history to gain firsthand access to the dancers. Lost Heritage Restored In April 1975 Phnom Penh fell to the Khmer Rouge, initiating one of the worst genocides in human history. Cravath escaped Phnom Penh only ten days earlier, with his research intact. The archives he accessed were destroyed. Most of the dancers perished in the Killing Fields. Earth in Flower is his historic account of their Cambodian legacy.

Click Here | Product Description: This collection of eleven essays by senior Asianist Craig Reynolds features debates about meaning in Southeast Asian and Thai history. He explores themes that have hitherto been treated superficially in Thai historical writing, including Siam’s semicolonialism in the late nineteenth century, the concepts of militarism and masculinity, collective memory and dynastic succession, the relationship of manual knowledge to ethnoscience, and the dialectics of globalization. Other more familiar topics under Reynolds’s microscope, treated with new material and approaches, include cultural nationalism and religious history. |

Product Description: For nearly a century, Thai state forestry focused overwhelmingly on extracting timber and keeping local people away from the forests. In forest ecosystems that contain some three thousand species of trees, Thai state foresters have concentrated on just three - teak, pine, and eucalyptus. While in recent years foresters have shifted their focus to conservation, they continue to pursue policies that marginalize communities, leaving them with little option but to protest and resist. Ann Danaiya Usher examines the historical ideas and styles of forestry that have long influenced the practice of Thai state forestry. She also traces the origins of the century-old conflict between foresters and forest communities and argues that unless some kind of resolution is found, the loss of forest is almost certain to continue until there is little left to protect. |

Click Here | Product Description: A detailed account of the events in Thailand from the military coup in Thailand in 1991 to the elections in 1992, when the democratic forces, or "angels" as they were popularly referred to, won the election and formed the government. The period under review can be seen as an important watershed in Thai political development, with the traditional military/bureaucratic leadership trying to cling to power in an age of increasing internationalism and globalozation, and with a growing middle class demanding a more democratic form of government. Although the book very clearly focuses on Thailand, the events described and analysed are placed within the broader framework of the development of democracy in the international setting, and the relevance of various models of democratic development to the Thai situation |
